Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival at St Thomas More College
St Thomas More College came alive with colour, culture and community as we celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Held at Tommy More in collaboration with the UWA Global Engagement team as part of Global Engagement Month, the festival brought together our residents, the UWA community and the wider community for an afternoon of cultural celebration, traditional activities and plenty of good food.
A celebration of culture and community
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is celebrated across many parts of East and Southeast Asia. Traditionally a time for family, togetherness and giving thanks, the full moon represents reunion and connection.
At Tommy More, the festival provided an opportunity for our community to learn more about this important cultural celebration while enjoying the afternoon together.
Lion dancing, lanterns and more
One of the highlights of the afternoon was the traditional lion dance, bringing plenty of energy to the Piazza. Guests gathered to watch the performance before taking part in a range of cultural activities.

Chinese calligraphy
Lantern painting
Mooncakes and tea
Cultural activities and demonstrations
From creating lanterns to trying their hand at calligraphy, guests had the chance to learn about different Mid-Autumn Festival traditions and experience the celebration together.
Bringing our communities together
One of the best parts of hosting cultural events at St Thomas More College is seeing different communities come together.
Our collaboration with the UWA Global Engagement team helped bring the Mid-Autumn Festival to our shared university community, creating an opportunity for students and guests from different cultural backgrounds to connect and celebrate together.
With UWA just across the road, Tommy More is home to students from a wide range of backgrounds, cultures and experiences. Events like this reflect the welcoming and inclusive community we aim to build at College.
